5. Professional Practice
Professional practice is an important part in the cultivation of full-time master degree. Abundant and high-quality professional practice is the reassure of education quality. In school, professional practice is no less than six months. The professional practice will be inspected by arranged, managed and assessed by the college.
Instructors must play a high attention to the professional practice. And to strengthen the relationship between the students and the actual needs of employers by building multiform practice base or co-culture base with manufacture enterprise, scientific research institutions and other units, explore new mechanism for personnel training and lay the foundation for the professional practice of students.
1). Classification of Professional Practice
The professional practice must follow three-pronged principles: combination of Concentrated Practice with Segmented Practice, combination of Practice in and Off-campus, combination of Professional Practice with Dissertation Work. It can be divided into following categories:
Field practice Off-campus: According to the training schedule, supervisors arrange postgraduate to take a field practice at least two months in the enterprises or other off-campus units which related with discipline. Students can also contact with practice units according to their employment intentions by themselves. Credit for each month’s field practice is 1.
Lateral Project Practice: supervisors arrange students to participate in their lateral project, and make clear each one’s research. And they also arrange students to do project research on the spot. Credit for each month’s research project(including experiment) is 1..
The application and practical design of software and hardware: engineering practice of software and hardware is carried out according to the research direction of postgraduate, the need of project, industrial research and productive needs. Each practical engineering problem is recorded by 1 credit. 1)Instructors arrange their students to master the application of one software and solve one practical engineering problem in research or engineering; 2) Students can also finished the design and production of a certain practical hardware guided by supervisors. And the concrete content is determined by the actual demand and research direction.
Supervisors arrange their students to complete these three professional practices above according to the scientific and serious training plan. Comprehensive report of the professional practice should be submitted within the fixed time for the assessment.
2)Assessment of Professional Practice
The professional practice of full-time professional postgraduate is assessed by credit, a total of 6 credits is for those who complete the professional practice and pass the examination. The 6 credits consist of 2 credits for out-campus practice and 4 credits which determined by supervisors and students under the guidance of cultivating objectives. The students, who do not participate in the professional practice or not pass the professional practice examination, cannot be allowed to apply for dissertation defense and graduation.
After professional practice, students should write a final report at least 5000 words independently. The part of out-campus practice must be comments and signature from by the internship units. After students submit their reports, supervisors will invite two experts to participate in the special performance. Combining the workload of professional practice, the performance in peacetime, and the comments from internship units and other two experts, supervisors give the comments and marks by the five-division system which includes excellent, good, medium, pass and fail. Those students who get pass or higher level are qualified to get the credits.
6. Mid-term Assessment
In the beginning of the fourth semester, the mid-term assessment for full-time professional postgraduate is going to be carried out. It includes:
(1) A comprehensive review of the student’s ideology and morality and performance since admission;
(2) Executive condition of the cultivate program;
(3) The course score, those who have two or more courses retook must be dropped out;
(4) The planning and executive condition of the professional practice;
(5) The state of physical and mental health.
Those who fail the assessment should not be allowed to apply for the dissertation defense.
7. Dissertation Work (requirements for topic, forms and standards of the dissertation, requirements for dissertation defense and degree award)
1) Topic Selection
(1) Full-time professional postgraduate should complete the literature review and dissertation proposal within the third semester, and submit the formal Graduate Dissertation Proposal and Implementation Plan, which should be considered valid only after supervisors review online. The dissertation defense has to be delayed if the plan is not submitted on time.
(2) The topic of the dissertation must come from actual project and applied task. There must be clear occupation background and application value in it, and it could also solve the problems in real life and engineering practice, and furthermore it could create certain economic and social value. To effectively improve students' ability to solve problem by guiding students complete theses independently and acquire the relevant scientific theories and technological methods.
2) Types and requirements of Dissertation
There are four types of dissertation, including product development, engineering design, application research, and engineering/project management. Each type of the dissertation should have clear technical requirements and certain amount of workload, and it also should reflect the author’s ability to use the professional theory, methods and techniques of electrical engineering comprehensively to solve technological problems. Furthermore it should also have certain theoretical foundation, and be progressive and practical.
(1) Product development: the development of the new product, key components, control systems, and application software and the digestion of the advanced product at home and abroad.
(2) Engineering design: design large-scale projects and systems in the field of electrical engineering by applying basic theory and professional knowledge comprehensively and using scientific methods and techniques.
(3) Application research:according to the practical problems and applications requirements in the field of electrical engineering, carry out practical researches by using basic theories, professional knowledge, scientific methods and techniques comprehensively.
(4) Engineering/Project management: according to the characteristics of electrical engineering project, the management research is carried out which refers to the implementation and operation of large-scale project in each stages of the life cycle of the project or each aspect of the project management. So the enterprise management by projects, project portfolio management or multi-project management, engineering functional management, and technology management must be researched.
3) Form and Evaluation Criteria of Dissertation
The requirements of the dissertation for full-time professional postgraduate are based on The Standard of Dissertation Writing Format for Doctor’s and Master’s Degree in Chongqing University (revised in 2007).
During research and dissertation writing, postgraduate should do the dissertation interim report in department regularly according to the cultivate plan; supervisors and department chairman will check the dissertation regularly, and the dean who charges the postgraduate work will also check the dissertation each semester.
4) Reply of Thesis of Full-time Professional Postgraduate
(1) After obtaining the required credits by finishing courses and professional practice, students should complete thesis independently under the guidance of supervisors, in order to indicate that they have the ability to handle specialized technology or management work independently. Then students are allowed to apply for pre-defense and defense.
(2) Institute encourages students to publish high-level academic dissertation.
(3) Students should submit complete material including the application of dissertation defense and dissertation to the department evaluated committee in advance 1 month. The evaluated committee will inform students whether they are allowed to defense or not 20 days before defence.
(4) After the first draft of dissertation is completed, students should participate in the pre-defense organized by the Department, and further modify the dissertation according to the suggestions in pre-defense. The revised dissertation should be printed by a laser printer.
(5) College should employ two experts engaged in the work of related discipline (including one expert outside) to blindly review the submitted dissertation. The time for reviewing is no less than 20 days.
(6) The dissertation defense committee is composed of three professors and five associate professors. Defense committee is organized unified by Graduate Affairs Office according to the dissertation contents.
(7) Secret ballot is adopted on whether to grant the master's degree or not. Only after more than two-thirds of all the members consent, the students can pass the defense. All the materials, including defense records should be submitted to evaluated committee, after signed by chairman of Dissertation Defense Committee,
(8) After the defense, according to the questions raised by reviewers, students should re-modify print, copy and bind the theses which are submitted to the Secretariat of evaluated committee and library in department. And these must be done before the procedure for leaving. If not, students cannot be allowed to conduct procedures for leaving.
