The 2023 Annual Academic Exchange Conference of the IEEE PES Power System Protection and Control Technical Committee (China), Sub-Committee on Electrical Equipment Online Monitoring and Fault Warning was successfully held.


From December 2nd to 3rd, 2023, the 2023 Annual Academic Exchange Conference of the IEEE PES Power System Protection and Control Technical Committee (China), Sub-Committee on Electrical Equipment Online Monitoring and Fault Warning was successfully held in the mountainous city, Chongqing. The conference was co-hosted by the State Key Laboratory of Power Transmission Equipment Technology at Chongqing University, the Power Science Research Institute of State Grid Chongqing Electric Power Company, and the Journal of Power System Protection and Control. It was supported by Sichuan Huisi Electric Co., Ltd. and Sichuan Shushun Electric Co., Ltd. The aim of the conference was to share research and practices in the field of electrical equipment online monitoring and fault warning, promote the development of technology for online monitoring, fault warning, risk identification, and safety control of power systems, and contribute to the construction of new types of power systems in China. The conference saw participation from over 20 universities including Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, North China Electric Power University, Wuhan University, and Chongqing University, as well as more than 20 power production, operation, and equipment manufacturing units such as State Grid Southwest Branch, State Grid Chongqing Electric Power Company, China Electric Power Research Institute, Southern Power Grid, NARI Group, and XJ Electric Co., Ltd., with a total of over 110 attendees.

The opening ceremony of the conference was chaired by Professor Xiong Xiaofu, the Chairman of the conference and a professor at Chongqing University. Professor Xiong introduced the composition of the Sub-Committee on Electrical Equipment Online Monitoring and Fault Warning and the agenda of the conference. He expressed gratitude to the attending leaders, experts, and scholars for their support.

 

Professor Hu Jianlin, the Party Secretary of the School of Electrical Engineering at Chongqing University, representing the school and the State Key Laboratory of Power Transmission Equipment Technology at Chongqing University, delivered a welcoming speech. He warmly welcomed the distinguished guests and congratulated the conference on its opening. Professor Hu also briefly introduced the organized research conducted by the laboratory on the digitization, greening, and intelligentization of transmission and transformation equipment in response to the needs of new types of power systems. He welcomed all the experts to visit the laboratory and provide guidance.

Director Huang Lin from the State Grid Chongqing Electric Power Science Research Institute expressed his hope in his address that through this conference, attendees could delve into analyzing the innovative demands of constructing new types of power systems in China. He also expressed his desire for sharing cutting-edge technologies in online monitoring, risk identification, and warning of power system equipment, thereby enhancing communication and cooperation among participants.

The conference invited 12 renowned experts to deliver captivating keynote speeches, bringing cutting-edge research findings and technological insights to the attendees. Professor Xiong Xiaofu and Professor Wang Youyuan respectively chaired the morning and afternoon sessions of the keynote speeches.

Professor Qi Bo from North China Electric Power University delivered a keynote speech titled "Advanced Sensing and State Diagnosis Technology for Power Equipment" during the conference. The report pointed out the challenges faced by current transformer online monitoring and fault diagnosis. It proposed conducting research on integrating high-reliability advanced sensing technology and intelligent assessment technology to innovate the existing equipment status evaluation and warning system. The aim is to form an advanced intelligent diagnostic system comprising "online monitoring - evaluation prediction - operation and maintenance - fault removal," which is considered as the future research direction.

Professor Sheng Gehao from Shanghai Jiao Tong University delivered a keynote speech titled "Research and Prospects of New Technologies for GIS State Monitoring" during the conference. The report addressed the existing issues with GIS state monitoring technology and introduced optical-electric composite sensing technology for reliable detection of partial discharge. It also discussed GIS partial discharge digital simulation models and methods for assessing the severity of insulation defects. Additionally, the speech outlined the development trends of GIS state monitoring technology.

Mr. Tang Fangao, Deputy Director of the Operation Department of the Control Center System of the State Grid Southwest Branch, delivered a keynote speech titled "Safety and Stability Risks and Prevention and Control Strategies of the Southwest Power Grid" during the conference. The report focused on the operational characteristics of the Southwest Power Grid, the main safety and stability risks it faces, and the exploration and practice of the Southwest Grid in recent years in areas such as constructing the frequency security defense line, strengthening dynamic reactive power support in load centers, and promoting coordinated control between sources and the grid. It also discussed the challenges facing the safe operation of the power grid in the Southwest region in the coming years and highlighted the key issues that need to be addressed.

Professor Du Xiong, Vice Dean of the School of Electrical Engineering at Chongqing University, delivered a keynote speech titled "State Monitoring and Health Management of Power Electronic Converters" during the conference. The report introduced the failure mechanisms of key components of power converters during service, state monitoring methods, life assessment, and health status assessment methods based on thermal regulation. It also proposed methods to improve the reliability of power electronic converters during long-term service.

Professor Wang Bo, Vice Dean of the Intelligent Grid Research Institute at Wuhan University, delivered a keynote speech titled "Digitalized Prevention and Control Technology for Power Production Safety in New Types of Power Systems" during the conference. The report emphasized the crucial role of power production safety in the economic forefront and the safety of people's lives. It explored various digital technologies such as acousto-optic-thermal multi-physical field fusion imaging, holographic image interpretation, and deep stereoscopic vision for the prevention and control of safety risks in power production.

Dr. Li Boyu from Xi'an Jiaotong University, representing Professor Hao Zhiguo, delivered a keynote speech titled "Novel Non-Electrical Protection for Oil-Immersed Power Transformers Based on Multi-Parameter Fusion" during the conference. The report discussed the problem of existing protection configurations failing to meet the safety requirements for the operation of large power transformers when internal faults occur. In response, it proposed a reliable identification method for the severe internal defects stage of transformers by integrating multiple parameters and multidimensional characteristics, thus advancing the protection defense line and improving protection performance.

Associate Professor Shi Shenxing from Tsinghua University delivered a keynote speech titled "Development of Feeder Fault Handling Technology—From Feeder Automation to Feeder Protection" during the conference. The report focused on the development of feeder fault handling technology in China's typical medium-voltage distribution networks. It outlined the influencing factors, key links, and technical requirements of feeder fault handling, and discussed technical solutions to meet user needs and adapt to the development of new types of distribution networks, taking into account existing feeder fault handling technologies.

Professor Hu Chenguo from Chongqing University delivered a keynote speech titled "Efficient Environmental Low-Frequency Mechanical Energy Harvesting and Its Application in State Perception" during the conference. The report introduced the advantages of Triboelectric Nanogenerator (TENG) technology. It discussed methods to enhance the output energy of TENG by increasing charge density and improving the average output power of sliding-type TENG. Additionally, it provided insights into the application prospects of TENG in sensing.

Professor Deng Xiangli from Shanghai University of Electric Power delivered a keynote speech titled "Transformer Fault Diagnosis Method Based on Numerical Twin and Leakage Magnetic Field Sensing" during the conference. The report proposed an early fault diagnosis scheme based on monitoring the difference between the digital twin virtual waveform and the actual current waveform, as well as the leakage magnetic field measurement waveform. It also presented the experimental results of this scheme on the world's first experimental platform for the physical dynamic model of transformer early faults based on magnetic field optical fiber measurement.

Professor Hao Jian from Chongqing University delivered a keynote speech titled "Insulation State Assessment Technology for High Voltage Submarine Cables Based on Frequency Domain Dielectric Response" during the conference. The report analyzed the hazards of thermal aging of XLPE insulation in submarine cables to the reliability of the insulation system. It constructed a quantitative calculation model for the aging status of high-voltage submarine cables based on frequency domain dielectric response characteristic parameters. The presentation also proposed an insulation aging state assessment method for submarine cables based on frequency domain dielectric response measurement technology.

Associate Researcher Zhang Wenhai from Sichuan University delivered a keynote speech titled "Preliminary Exploration of the Application of Power Disturbance Analysis in Equipment Fault Early Warning" during the conference. The report pointed out that by utilizing the voltage and current waveform data generated by power disturbances, the state of equipment and systems can be effectively sensed. Based on this, exploratory research was conducted on the disturbances that may occur in the early stages of permanent faults in two types of equipment: medium-voltage cables and power capacitors.

Senior Engineer Zhong Jiayong from the Power Science Research Institute of State Grid Chongqing Electric Power Company delivered a keynote speech titled "Optimization Technology for Distribution Network Acquisition and Perception Terminals under the Background of Grid Digitization Transformation" during the conference. The report introduced the construction concept, technical route, and construction status of digital transformation of the power grid, including the power grid resource business middle platform, enterprise-level real-time measurement center, and data middle platform. It proposed a technical solution to build virtual terminals to achieve precise perception of the distribution network.

In the concluding remarks, Professor Xiong Xiaofu, the conference chair, delivered a summary speech. He pointed out that the expert reports presented at the conference were representative, forward-looking, and practical. He also acknowledged the contributions made by young experts and scholars in the field and expressed sincere gratitude to all the guests and expert speakers.

The successful organization of this conference has provided a better platform for communication and collaboration among academia, industry, and research in the field of online monitoring and fault warning for electrical equipment, which has been widely recognized by the attending representatives. Experts at the conference engaged in extensive and in-depth discussions on theories, practices, technological developments, and engineering applications.
